How long have you been running
I started running in 2010 not able to run a mile, I built up my fitness and entered three 10k races at the end of my first year and everything progressed from there. In March 2011 I entered my 1st half marathon and by August I had done my first ultra competing in HOTH. What made you start running? I was overweight and realised I had to do something about it, my eating habits and lifestyle all needed to change. I didn't realise at the time but I was suffering with depression and my regular running with my brother really helped this, I've never looked back.
Biggest running achievement
This was a hard one as there have been a few, it has to be the 3rd place finish at Endure24 completing 125 miles.
Three things about me
I don't use and can't stick to training schedules, if you are after advice on marathons or ultras then I'll tell you to get the miles in your legs. I swam the River Humber; if you ever run across the bridge with me I will tell you again. My social life (like many runners) is planned around running and I take my running trainers on weekend breaks/holidays.
Favourite race
Another question that i couldn't answer so I'll list two. Endure24, it would have to be Leeds as it's the only one I've done. Fantastic event as a solo or as a team and the social aspect is amazing. BYU (backyard ultra) and also known as last man standing, my favourite type of race and I love the format, I've done two now and will do more in the future. GOBYU (god's own backyard ultra) in Leeds is my recommendation for this.
Running goals 2023
My only race and goal I can focus on at the minute is the Thames250, with less than a 40% completion rate I'm hoping I have what it takes to cross the finish line. 2024 I would love to be in the top 100 of the BYU world rankings, I'm currently 874th and would need to complete 49+ laps or 205+ miles to achieve this. Running tips - Set goals and book races, I'm currently on a running streak and set a goal of 100 days to motivate myself through February & March.
Trainers/running gear
I could talk for hours about this and will do if we meet on a run. Trainers depends on the running surface and conditions, generally Altra's on the road and Innov8 when on the trails (I have lots of trainers and always buying more). I love Montane's quality of gear and own lots of their tops/baselayers. I always wear Injinji socks and Runderwear for me is a must.
Favourite food
I love curry and anything that can be served with rice, pizza is always a favourite with runners and I'd never say no to pizza. When out on the trails or a long run I like to snack and you'll find scotch eggs, pork pies and flapjack tucked in the pockets of my backpack. A good breakfast or pre race meal for me is overnight oats topped with fruit.
Three celebrities I'd invite for dinner
Damian Hall, John Stocker, Jasmin Paris. Yes they are all ultra runners and have all excelled in different types of races and events. I would have so many questions for just one of these never mind all three together.
Best thing about being a KUHAC runner I like the social side of the club and how friendly and welcoming everyone is. For me nothing is better than going out for a run and chatting with people about races/gear/nutrition and taking tips/advice from different people.
Thanks Craig Herbert for an inspiring KuHAC Q&A 💙💛
