Manchester marathon - would Phill Donald do it again??

17th April 2023

We started at old Trafford cricket ground with a well organised bag drop and a nice walk around the  grounds. Then, a small walk to get you to the start line. I was well placed with a staggered start from 9-11am and, even though this was my first time running Manchester, everything was clearly set up to ease pre race nerves. It does cater for everyone from elites to the runners who run walk to the finish (who are getting their money's worth!!)

Manchester marathon is known for being friendly and the support didn't disappoint.  It certainly draws in the spectators with lots of kids handing out sweets as well as encouragement. Support was fantastic all the way around for the whole 26.2 miles and having  your name on your shirt is a must for any race runner.

There were water stations every three miles and regular gel/toilet stations which all went smoothly, picking up water bottles and gels on the go. Now the hills, (that is a bit dramatic, as coach Steve would say - they are more like mounds) they are very short and not very steep; do not be put off just because us hullligans are used to flats.

It is a must do race for any Man Utd fans as running past Old Trafford on to Sir Alex Ferguson way was a great way to see these special locations. As we were crossing timer mats at 10K, 21K and 30k, you can be tracked by friends and family so it was a boost knowing you had the support of everyone at home too.

The last half mile is a slight hill with a sharp left turn but then you can see the home straight lined with support everywhere - they really carry you home. The finish line is live on YouTube so you can show everyone your fantastic achievement. You also get a great t-shirt and medal for your efforts.

With all that being said would I do it again? Yes definitely the support was nothing like I have raced in before. And a special mention to Dan, another Kuhac enjoying the delights of the Manchester marathon.
