Q&A - GLEN HARTLEY

2nd July 2024

How long have you been running?

I used to run the odd Sport Relief 6 miles and Hull 10Ks around 2009/2010. I completed my first parkrun in 2016, though I didn’t properly get into running until around 2018.
In 2019 I stepped it up and completed 43 parkruns in the year alongside a 10k and two half marathons.

What made you start running?

I’m very active and sporty, but running was always a challenge. My lungs collapsed when I was 15; after my operation I had less lung capacity. I enjoyed cycling for a while as that was easier on my lungs. I used to run too quickly and out of rhythm, so I found it hard to run consistently.
Eventually when I joined the parkruns after some recommendations, it opened up a whole new community and group of friends who offered lots of great advice. Since then the running bug has stuck. I always knew I’d join a running club, I’d just say it took me longer then expected to do so, but well worth the wait!

Biggest running achievement?

I ran 18 miles once during Covid times. I set out to do 10k, then thought “Raywell and Swanland isn’t too far from Cottingham is it?” – Silly me. It’s the furthest I have ever run, incredibly painful and some would say idiotic, but looking back that gives me great confidence for a marathon alongside correct training.

 Three things about me:

  1. I follow American football (LA Rams handily wear the same colours as KuHaC!)
  2. I have represented England in the Walking Football World Championships
  3. I was once on You’ve Been Framed!

Favourite Race:

I really enjoyed the Humber Bridge half marathon, regardless of the 28c heat and cardiac hill! Though I’m due to run the Great North Run in September ’24 so I expect this to overtake it.

Running goal for 2024/2025:

I’d love to do a marathon in 2025. I signed up to the London Marathon 2nd chance ballot, but didn’t get in. I currently have one eye on Manchester marathon for 2025…if I take the leap!

Running Tip:

I’ve heard lots of running advice as I joined parkruns and KuHaC. Some will work for you, some won’t.
A great tip for distance running that I heard at parkrun, “It’s the pace that kills you” – Be steady and you’ll get to that distance!

Trainers:

Regular running: Karrimor Rapid 4
Dry road running: Nike Renew Ride 3
Wet / Standard Trail: Salomon Alphacross 5 GTX
Muddy Trail (Don’t mind if I ruin them!): Salomon Speedcross 4 GTX

Favourite Food:

I’m a big fan of American cuisine, though I do love loaded nacho’s or pizza too. Tough choice!

Three celebrities I’d invite to a dinner

Zachary Levi, Taylor Swift and Bob Mortimer

What a trio this would be!

Best thing about being a Kuhac Runner:

I love being able to represent a club, being part of a team (and it truly is a team!) and being able to wear my club shirt with pride as I take it with me to events up and down the country (and even abroad!)

I’m still meeting KuHac Members I haven’t met before, and I have a chat with a new person every Thursday which is lovely. Everyone is so welcoming and there for you.
